Our guide to the Circular Economy
So, what is circular economy?
The circular economy is a waste reducing idea for us to produce and consume goods in a way that helps them avoid ending up in landfills and incinerators when they still have plenty of life left in them. This involves sharing, renting, re-using, repairing, up-cycling and re-cycling materials and products to keep them in circulation for as long as possible.
.
.
To be truly circular, a product will be designed in a way that the materials used are infinitely re-usable and never reach the landfills. It’s hard to achieve this utopia, but the world is moving that way and we can all be part of the change.
How can I contribute to circular economy?
First off, the best thing we can do for the planet with our consuming habit is … consume less! We all know this of course, but it’s difficult not to consume, especially when it comes to our kids!
.
Prolonging the life of your clothing also has huge positive impact on the environment, so it’s really worth spending just a bit of time on small repairs to give you and others loads more use out of your favourite things. Give garments extra life by repairing them where you can to retain their value and reduce the need to buy more and more! Here are some repair tips to help your clothes stay in tip top condition.
.
.
Only wash clothes when you need to - the fewer washes the longer the garment will last...
.
Buy fewer, better quality clothes and treat them with loving care. Fast fashion often isn’t the value for money it implies … and it’s produced at huge cost to the Earth. It’s largely made in a way that is toxic to the environment using synthetic petroleum based textiles like polyester, acrylic, nylon, spandex and acetate - all made from non-renewable fossil fuels. Choose clothes made from recycled materials or items made with single rather than mixed fibres so that they can be more easily recycled.
.
.
Buying or renting from ethical brands who produce quality clothes which stay in good condition for longer, and which are produced with as little negative environmental impact as possible is a great habit to get into. When you’ve finished with them, share your clothes by passing down, donating or selling.
.
